Henry Street Settlement opens doors of opportunity for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social services, arts, and health care programs.

Henry Street Makes History (with a $360K Grant from the National Endowment for Humanities)!

Henry Street Settlement’s legacy will come alive for local and international audiences, thanks to a competitive grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This rare award of precious humanities dollars to a social service agency recognizes the historical significance of Henry Street and the Settlement house movement in New York City.

The Settlement will receive $360,000 to support The House on Henry Street: Settlements, Public Health and Social Reform. This extraordinary multi-platform project will explore social activism, urban poverty and public health through the lens of Henry Street’s history. Its centerpiece will be a permanent interactive exhibition in the Settlement’s c. 1830 landmarked headquarters at 265 Henry Street.

ACTION CENTER: HENRY STREET SPEAKS UP!

Henry Street is alarmed that new federal government policies aim to undermine freedoms and services that are central to our mission and essential to those we serve. In response, we have launched the Action Center online and the Speak Up Station at the Abrons Arts Center to enable members of the community to access services, voice their concerns and support Henry Street.

CELEBRATING SOCIAL WORK MONTH

Nearly 100 social workers and their colleagues from Lower East Side settlement houses celebrated Social Work Month 2017 with a breakfast and program hosted by Henry Street Settlement. Staff members from United Neighborhood Houses, Grand Street Settlement, Educational Alliance, University Settlement, Chinatown Planning Council and Hamilton-Madison Houses attended the event on March 29.

Henry Street Settlement Executive Director David Garza told the packed room, "Today when much of what we stand for is at risk, I can’t think of any place I’d rather be standing than in a room full of social workers because I know that you have the fight in you."

HENRY STREET YOUTH EXPAND THEIR HORIZONS WITH COLLEGE TRIP

There was no sleeping in for 11th graders in the Expanded Horizons College Success program over mid-winter recess. The Henry Street college preparatory program took 47 of its participants to Washington, D.C., to visit five colleges: Georgetown University, George Washington University, Howard University, University of Maryland, College Park and Goucher College. The youth were able to explore each campus in-depth, often participating in tours and even attending a University of Maryland basketball game at the Xfinity Center, one of the largest college basketball arenas in the country.

QUINCY ENUNWA STARS AT HENRY STREET

New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa scored a touchdown at Henry Street Settlement on March 30, where he was greeted with cheers and high fives at both our Early Childhood Education Center and Boys and Girls Republic (BGR). At BGR, after-school students welcomed him with signs, balloons, and chants of “J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS!”  Enunwa joined BGR Sports & Recreation Coordinator Luis Checa and other BGR staff to present awards to the MVPs of the recent BGR flag football season. He then presided over the coin toss for that night’s Super Bowl, the final game of the season.
